Update disabling startup?

Recommended Posts

I just noticed in the XP Sys Tray that SAS Pro wasn't loaded, so I restarted and it wasn't there again or in processes. Looking at Preferences, the check box for "Start SAS when Windows starts" box was unchecked. I hadn't done it, so my question is, how did it change? I can't say for certain when this change occurred, but have noticed that every so often, maybe every some number of months, it happens. Two possibilities come to mind: malware or something in an occasional SAS Pro update that's disabling that setting. Don't have any evidence of the former. Anyone else experience this from time to time? Other ideas? Thanks,

Hi Genegold.

I've experienced the same on XP systems with a few customer's computers. As you suspected, most of that is due to malware.

We can pursue this if you want, but an XP computer is very old. I suggest backing up your data in preparation for a new computer.

You may (or may not) be right about malware. Is only SAS being targeted? Other apps, normal and anti-malware, haven't been touched. OTOH, the fact that one uses XP does not necessarily indicate the computer's effective age. There are lots of XP machines with recent, if not current, motherboards and CPUs and other innards - like mine. Even for companies, it is sometimes more cost effective and less trouble to update computer innards than replace whole computers and operating systems.

No offense, but that statement is ludicrous on many levels. I can elaborate if requested.

Win 7/64 now and this problem continues. I just noticed with 5.0.0.1136 that it was unchecked again. Either the updates or something else is causing it. I thought maybe CCleaner might be deleting it, but the SAS box there is unchecked.

SAS Pro seems to lose its registration info on my laptop every now & then.I have to start it up in Admin mode and re-enter my serial number and re-activate, which always works but at some point it will randomly say that "Evaluation period has expired". After re-activation "Enable Real-time Protection" is unchecked and has to be rechecked to enable it. I'm using Win7 SP1 x64 on a Dell Studio XPS1640 but have had this problem from before SP1.
