  1. A slow scan has been an issue with SAS 4.25 in Windows 98 SE. Maybe also with SAS 4.26. 32MB is not much. Try uninstalling SAS and installing SAS 4.24.1004. You can download it here. http://filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/5052/ The updates still work and it doesn't hang in Win98se.
  2. Which version of Windows do you have?
  3. Try the free version of Avast. It seems to have the fewest issues and the most protection of the free antivirus programs.

    Windows 98

Even without the problems of the newer versions, if the detection in Windows 98 is not improved, there's no advantage to trying to run a newer version of the program. As long as 4.24.1004 still gets the updates and has the same level of detection in Windows 98 then it should be fine to run 4.24.1004.
  5. Advanced SystemCare will fix some slowing issues and it's free. http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html?Str=download
  6. Adware.MyWebSearch/FunWebProducts is often part of Ask.com/SafeSearch toolbar. Some older versions used to do some bad things. The current version is suppose to be clean but is still flagged by some antimalware programs as adware. Trojan.Media-Codec is the Zlob Trojan as fake codec's. The cookies may not be harmful but you most likely need to make sure the web browsers are closed and not running in the background to remove them. First close all web browsers. Then press Alt - Ctrl - Delete keys and make sure Internet Explorer and Firefox are not running in the background. If they are then highlight them and right click on them and close process. Also make sure there are no toolbars running in the background. You can uninstall any and all toolbars from Add/Remove programs if you don't use the toolbars to search. Now scan again with SAS. If it still can't remove everything try scanning with SAS in Safe Mode.
  7. Here are some downloads for it. Choose "beta" http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/S ... 36499.html http://filepig.org/download/superantispyware/
  8. KIS is Kaspersky Internet Security.
  9. I don't know if this will work but here are instructions for uninstalling. http://www.gamevance.com/deactivate.php and maybe rel uninstall instructions here http://www.exterminate-it.com/malpedia/remove-gamevance .......
  10. SAS version 4.25 does seem to have problems with Windows 98 SE. Here is a download location for SAS version 4.24. http://filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/5052/ Also read through this thread. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2500 And this thread. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2527 ......
  11. I also got a recent one called "Adware.Vundo Variant" C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE\MST120.DLL
  12. Open the SAS control panel. Go to Preferences and go to the updates tab. Uncheck the "check for program updates when the application starts" box.
  13. Well since Win98SE doesn't use NTFS there may be no advantage to using a newer version than 4.24.1004 in Win98SE. I've found SAS and A-squared to be some of better anti-malware programs for Win98SE.
  14. I don't think the free version of Malwarebytes runs in the background. When installing a newer version of SAS it will run the uninstaller of the older version but you shouldn't have to uninstall yourself first.
  15. Yes version 4.24.1004 does seem to run better on Win98SE than version 4.25.1012. Even though some software companies still make their software to install on Windows 98 they likely no longer test the software on Windows 98.
  16. Claire if you click the older version on the right you will see the download link. Here is the download for the previous version. http://filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/5052/ Click "Download this version".
  17. This happens in Windows 2000 with other antivirus and antispyware programs. I don't think it's when they are uninstalled but when they are installed. Here is some information from Microsoft at this link. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826721/en-us
  18. I run SAS, Malwarebytes and Avast together with no problems. Make sure to keep them updated. You should be able to update the program without separately uninstalling the older version. It will uninstall when you run the installer for the newer version. The reason for having SAS load at start up is that some malware will prevent it from starting once the PC is infected with that sort of malware. Also I believe the free version now checks for updates when the program starts. I'm not sure this was always the case and I would still check for updates manually. Malwarebytes needs to have the updates checked manually with the free version.
  19. The link no longer works. Here is some information from Microsoft. It looks newer than a month ago. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007 http://www.microsoft.com/security/porta ... /Conficker Some more information. http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/worm_w3 ... p_al.shtml http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/worm_w3 ... un_a.shtml
  20. Look at the list on the right at this link. http://filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/ I don't know how well the updates will work with an older version of the program.
  21. The current version of SAS is 4.25.1012.
  22. I use Avast antivirus and Outpost free firewall that runs on Win98SE. I think the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader that works is 5.0 but I use Foxit pdf reader. For Java updated security on Win98SE I think the latest version of JRE is This is sometimes called Java JRE 5.0 update 17. For Windows Media player, Quicktime, Realplayer and playing movie DVD's I use Mdeia player Classic for Win98. http://majorgeeks.com/Media_Player_Clas ... d5783.html For CD/DVD writing I use an older version of Deep Burner. It's Deep Burner 1.8. http://filehippo.com/download_deepburner/903/
  23. I have old PC with Windows 98 SE. I run SAS and I found a few programs that fix a lot of things in Win98SE. Diskeeper Lite (reboot PC after installing before using, replaces Windows defrag program) http://majorgeeks.com/Diskeeper_Lite_d1207.html Ccleaner Slim (fixes disk cleanup that doesn't work in Win98SE, run cleaner and registry) http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_ ... d4191.html Firefox 2 (latest security updates and newest version that runs on Win98SE) http://majorgeeks.com/Mozilla_Firefox_2_d285.html SpywareBlaster (protects against active X infections and restricts known bad websites, check for updates and download updates and enable all protection) http://majorgeeks.com/SpywareBlaster_d2859.html
  24. Persistent cookies have an expiration date. These cookies are stored in the local users account under Users\"username"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies directory, and the Users\"username"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\Low directory for applications running under low privileges. Session cookies are stored in memory and can be accessed only by the process that created them. That long to scan is not normal. Maybe try a restart or reinstall SAS.
