Yesterday I opened SAS on two computers at two different locations (one runs XP, the other Windows 7, both 32 bit). An application update was downloaded and installed on both. I then clicked 'check for updates'. The definition update dialogue box then hung for about five minutes before failing. I tried the definition update again this morning with the same result.

Try a complete uninstall and reinstall.
